Silver Whinnys prevent insects and dirt from entering the wound while still allowing the wound to breathe freely. The double layers in the woven sock create a barrier against disease-carrying insects and protect UV-sensitive skin. The woven silver threads provide an antimicrobial barrier that prevents harmful microbes from reaching the tissue. The socks absorb moisture from the wound and move it to the outer surface, where it can evaporate. This effect helps keep the wound tissue dry and counteracts the warm, damp environment that bacteria and fungi need to grow.

Product references and details: Silver Whinnys Product Sheet

Silver Whinnys allow oxygen, which is crucial for healing, to reach the skin because the socks are breathable. Oxygen is essential for wound healing as it helps dry wound fluid and promotes the formation of stronger granulation tissue. Open wounds are normally at risk from insects and dirt, but Silver Whinnys protect the wound while preserving the benefits of leaving it exposed to air.

The silver in the socks provides an antimicrobial barrier that prevents bacteria and fungi from reaching the tissue. Bacteria and fungi would need to penetrate both layers of the woven sock to reinfect the skin. For optimal effect, the socks should be changed daily. After 24 hours of use, bacteria and dirt can overcome the silver’s effect, so daily replacement supports the best possible healing. Silver Whinnys are sold in 4-packs and are usually used in pairs, allowing one pair to be washed while the other is worn. They can be machine washed at 60°C with regular detergent, without fabric softener.

Silver Whinnys absorb moisture from the wound and transport it to the outside of the sock where it can evaporate. Unlike traditional bandages, which trap moist wound fluid against the skin, Silver Whinnys keep the wound tissue dry and prevent the warm, humid environment bacteria and fungi need to thrive. By keeping the skin surface dry, they also help keep the legs cool during the hottest summer months. The effect of Silver Whinnys can be compared to high-quality sports socks in their ability to keep skin dry and cool.

Customer Testimonial:

"Hi, thank you for sending the silver socks so quickly, which my daughter ordered. Here are some photos from use. Unfortunately, we didn’t take a before photo, so the first pictures are after 48 hours of using Silver Whinnys. It actually looked worse before we started using the socks. The last pictures are after an additional 48 hours, four days after he received the socks. Absolutely incredible! Before using the socks, he had been on Hippotrim for seven days with little effect, and it had gotten slightly worse in the meantime. We left the socks on for 48 hours without touching them. He is ridden gently now to avoid strain, but the socks stay on all the time, and we protect them during washing. On the days we changed the socks, we washed his legs with Lactacyd and let them dry thoroughly before putting on new socks. We were a bit skeptical at first, but it works now!"

WHEN ALL ELSE HAS FAILED – SILVER WHINNYS® SUCCEED - SO WHAT ARE SILVER WHINNYS ?

Equines can suffer from a variety of lesions that affect their Lower legs: dermatitis, scratches, mud fever, dew poisoning, greasy heel, summer sores, and wounds. Silver Whinnys® provide the critical qualities in bandaging/leg protection that allow non-responding cutaneous (affecting the skin) lesions to finally heal. Sold in 4 pack

They end the cycle of infection/re-infection. Silver inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi in the socks. They are safe, non-toxic, drug-free bandages that obstruct disease-causing pathogens, insects, dirt, debris, and sunlight (UV) from penetrating the socks and reaching the skin.

You found us, and that is a vital step in your efforts to help your horse heal!

“EPD, is not a specific diagnosis. It is a syndrome. A term –scratches, dew poisoning, greasy heel, mud fever, foot rot, cracked heels -- to describe cutaneous lesions caused by a variety of diseases that affect the lower legs of horses,” explains award-winning veterinary dermatologist, research author and full Professor, Rosanna Marsella, DVM, of the University of Florida (Gainesville) College of Veterinary Medicine. Read More about EPD here (Veterinarians Get a Leg Up in the War Against Equine Dermatitis)

Anyone who has owned a horse suffering from severe, non-responding, and various manifestations of Equine Pastern Dermatitis (EPD) knows these are not skin conditions cured with a simple application of over-the-counter ointments. If they could be cured as simply as this, your veterinarian and treatment bills would be much less expensive. Severe cases change not only the quality of an equine's life but its owner’s as well. The financial cost of healing is compounded by added stress and countless hours of care.

The ABCs below are the reasons Silver Whinnys® will be the best bandaging and leg protection you have ever purchased for your horse’s legs. Aside of saving hundreds of dollars in throw-way bandaging, reusable Silver Whinnys have all of the vital qualities necessary to protect your horse while healing. They offer qualities that traditional bandaging cannot provide. More veterinarians are including our socks in their treatment plans when protecting the tissue is essential to health and healing.

The following assets or qualities are essential in protection and healing:

A. With Silver Whinnys, valuable oxygen can reach the skin. The socks breathe. Oxygen has long been recognized as important to healing as it helps dry excessive moisture and allows more durable granulating tissue to develop. The socks also block dirt, insects, and debris that present obstacles to healing when sores and wounds are left open to the air. The double layer of woven sock provides a barrier against disease-carrying insects while protecting UV sensitive skin.

B.The silver in the socks makes an antimicrobial barrier that prevents dangerous microbes from reaching the tissue. Bacteria and fungi must pass through the double layer of protection in order to re-infect the skin. If the socks are changed daily with clean socks, the power of the silver to inhibit bacteria and fungi from passing through the socks to the tissue remains optimum. After the first 24 hours the sheer number of germs in a barn environment can finally overwhelm the silver in the socks, so changing them daily is important to keep the healing on track. See our FAQ page for Silver Whinnys for more questions answered about how they manage the environment relative to your horse’s condition.

C.Silver Whinnys wick moisture from the skin surface. They absorb and remove the dampness caused by exuding body serums. This moisture is absorbed and transferred to the exterior of the sock where it can evaporate from the surface. Traditional bandaging traps damp, warm material against the wounds and dermatitis the same way that a dirty diaper holds undesirable moisture and materials against a baby’s tender skin. The wicking action of the socks helps keep the surface of the skin dry. It defeats the warm moist environment that bacteria and fungi must have to propagate. Not only do the socks keep the tissue dry but also in the summer months, these moisture-managing properties of the socks keep legs cool. It is the same cooling action provided by a light cotton shirt that takes the sweat from your body and allows it to evaporate, thus cooling your skin temperature. Our socks utilize the same moisture management yarns used in the highest quality athletic socks that keep feet dry and cool during the demands of sport competition.

In the course of healing, inflammation, infection, and re-injury can cause slow healing. The development of proud flesh, exuberant tissue, is a by-product of slow healing. Proud flesh is NOT a product of too rapid a healing! It is the body overreacting to impaired healing. A healthy speed of healing is desired and that means dermatitis, wounds, and sores all need to be protected from the hazards that prevent a healthy, rapid healing.

For the large breed horses, continued unresolved dermatitis can lead to devastating conditions.

The edema of Cellulitis causes the destruction of blood vessels. Lymphangitis causes permanent tissue damage and the destruction of lymph vessels. Vets understand the risks of slow healing, which is why they seek to aggressively handle the inflammation and infection putting your horse at risk during these episodes. Once these conditions are stabilized, Silver Whinnys® are a proven tool to help you and your vet protect legs from the hazards of the equine environment that drive equine legs to these dangerous episodes. For more about Lymphangitis and Cellulitis see our article of September 6, 2016 published in EquiManagement Magazine.

The silver used in the construction of our socks will never wash out. It will not weaken. It will not degrade over time. The silver will be as strong the day you throw these socks away in shreds as the day you bought them. We do not use “infused” silver, which is a method of dunking garments in an environmentally egregious chemical bath. Our silver is there to stay in our socks and meets the highest level of environmentally safe manufacturing standards.

The best way to clean them is to machine wash and dry them. This removes the greatest amount of exuded material and bio-burden from the socks. Use a “free and clear” detergent. Avoid bleach as it destroys elastic. You can use OxyClean® to help whiten if you wish. Do not use dryer sheets as the chemicals used in fabric softeners or perfumed detergents are not what you want against angry inflamed skin.

If you are a customer in the UK, due to brexit, please send us a mail to info@pharmalight.se and we will come back to you on how you can order the socks.

Veterinarian Testimonial

Award-winning veterinary dermatologist, research author and full Professor, Rosanna Marsella, DVM, of the University of Florida (Gainesville) College of Veterinary Medicine

“One mare, in just a few days, was almost completely healed. I tried them on a chronic leg wound on a different horse, that had granulation tissue that would bleed and never close and had failed to improve with antibiotics, and after two days, the wound was no longer bleeding or thick around the edges. It went from fire-red to light pink and showing a thin epithelium. I was thrilled. This has incredible potential,” the veterinarian and researcher concluded for dermatological issues like summer sores (habronema), and discouraging secondary infection in non-healing wounds.

Steve Soule, DVM, with Palm Beach Equine Medical Centers of Florida and New York, and a U.S. Equestrian Federation Veterinarian since 1978.

“So far, I've had unanimous success in alleviating every problem I've applied these Sox to.”

“Silver Whinnys are much less expensive, than continuously bandaging horses. The costs of Vetrap, Elastikon or gauze on a daily or twice-daily basis adds up tremendously while in comparison, these can be removed daily and replaced with clean socks. The socks can be laundered over and over, cutting back on another big expense related to bandaging.”

“I recommend my clients leave the Sox on, covering the area at all times, including during exercise, and putting a clean one on daily until the wound heals. It's as easy as bringing a horse in after a workout, taking off the dirty Sox and replacing with a clean one, and being good to go.”

I use your product daily, I believe in the efficacy of Silver Whinnys Sox

“I am currently competing in dressage at medium level on my 17.1 hh buckskin Australian Warmblood gelding, Duart Rise Bradman (bred and broken-in by me). Duart Rise Bradman (or as we call him, "Flee") has 4 long white socks and has suffered from photosensitivity for all of his life. Flee usually has a break-out of photosensitive sores on one of his white legs at around this time each year. Previously, I have spent a fortune on veterinary treatment, trying, without success, to clear these painful sores.

During 2017, I discovered Silver Whinnys Sox. I used them to cure the sores that Flee was still struggling with from the 2016 summer break-out. I was thrilled with the ease and speed with which this stubborn problem was rectified. I posted a before and after photo on Facebook and sent my story, pictures and thanks to Sox For Horses Australia.

I have since used Silver Whinnys Sox on a more recent batch of sores that Flee has and a client’s horse. I was able to send the client’s horse home without any sores. I recommended that the horse’s owner purchase a pair of socks. I have also suggested on Facebook that three of my other clients purchase Silver Whinnys Sox. I use your product daily, I believe in the efficacy of Silver Whinnys Sox. Kind regards”

Nat Goldsworthy, Australia

I started to see improvements at end of Day 1

“Hello. I know you have so many clients...certainly do not expect you to remember me.....just wanted to share our success with SOX. Today is 3 weeks since I started using SOX on my 24 yo thoroughbred, Zo. I have had this horse for 20 yrs and he has had numerous outbreaks of the scabs etc on his left hind and left front fetlocks and pasterns. Like so many of your clients, I scrubbed with betadine and used vet prepared ointments that contained steroids and antibiotics. Was becoming a nightmare for my horse and myself.

I started to see improvements at end of Day 1. Now, almost all of the scabs are gone...just a few pinpoint size remain and they are very dry. Hair is returning. Skin is pink and healthy. He has done very well with the SOX. Both of us have gotten so much better putting on and taking off. I can now change every 48 hrs and all will be well.

I contacted my local vet and shared my story with him in hopes that he will suggest to other clients. I have had several people inquire as to what the heck is my horse wearing. Some people just will not take the time to check their horses' legs and put in any effort to help them with these dermatological issues. But, THANK YOU so much for these SOX. Greatest product for horses I have ever purchased. I feel I no longer have to fear the onset of late spring and summer when the problem seems to recur. I have also been so much more aware of applying sunscreen to his pink nose each am to protect those areas. Please, do not ever decide to go out of business. I am a customer for life”
